The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) is one of the largest public health systems in the U.S., dedicated to providing high-quality medical care to over 600,000 residents annually, especially underserved and vulnerable populations. With a workforce of more than 22,000 employees, DHS operates four major hospitals, including LAC+USC Medical Center and Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, as well as 26 health centers and specialty clinics across the county. These facilities offer comprehensive services ranging from primary and preventive care to specialized treatments, emergency services, and mental health support. The department’s mission is to ensure equitable access to healthcare, regardless of a patient’s ability to pay, while promoting healthier communities through patient-centered, culturally responsive care.
DHS also leads several key initiatives to address public health challenges, such as the My Health LA program for low-income, uninsured residents and the Whole Person Care initiative, which integrates physical, mental health, and social services for vulnerable populations, including those experiencing homelessness. In addition, the department played a critical role in LA County’s COVID-19 response, providing testing, vaccinations, and treatment. Career opportunities within DHS are diverse, spanning roles in medical, administrative, and support services, with a strong focus on community health and reducing health disparities. DHS remains a vital part of the county's commitment to public health, leveraging partnerships with academic institutions and community organizations to enhance service delivery and improve health outcomes.
